Thai massage combines yoga, acupressure, stretching, and rhythmic compression techniques

Thai Massage

The origin of Thai massage goes back a long way, originally being used in Thailand more than 2500 years ago. With its roots in Ayurvedic medicine and Buddhism, Thai massage is more interactive than other therapies, combining acupressure, yoga postures and Ayurvedic principles from India.

Why book a Thai massage?

Overall, a Thai massage gives a very invigorating experience, improving flexibility, reducing stress and tension and reuniting the connection between mind and body.

Your therapist will use a mixture of stretching, kneading and rocking techniques on the body to improve circulation and remove muscular stiffness. Don’t be surprised if your therapist uses not only their hands but also their feet, knees and elbows during the session. Expect to be moved into yoga-style positions whilst at the same time remaining relaxed and comfortable. Oils are not normally used but do ask your therapist if you have a preference for this.

What to expect from your Thai massage?

Your therapist will have undergone specific training in the art of Thai massage, being taught how to stretch and massage the body in a way that harmonises the spirit. Many clients find the whole experience unique and transformative, leaving them feeling blissfully relaxed and in harmony with their bodies and minds.

Here are just a few of the techniques and movements that your therapist may use:

  • Stretching – moving limbs gently into positions similar to Yoga, this increases flexibility.
  • Acupressure – pressure is applied to various spots on the body’s energy lines, reducing tension, improving circulation and freeing up the flow of energy.
  • Rhythmic Compression – rocking/rhythmic compression is applied along the body’s energy lines, improving detoxification, aiding relaxation and soothing the nervous system.
  • Joint Mobilization – special movements help to improve joint mobility, particularly good for those with arthritis or pain in the joints.
